The Morning Raga | Dance and Flight in the First Light
Morning at Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary unfolds like music.

Before the sun rises fully, the river glows softly, mist hangs low, and the sanctuary begins its day in rhythm rather than noise. It felt less like a place waking up and more like a raga slowly taking shape, each note building on the last.
That morning, I felt pure joy behind the camera.

Pelicans took to the air, one after another, then in flowing groups. Some skimmed low over the water, wings brushing the surface in passing. Others swooped in wide arcs, their silhouettes briefly outlined against the first light. Each movement felt timed, almost rehearsed, yet completely wild.
There was no single frame to chase. Everything was happening together. Flight, landings, takeoffs, reflections, and light shifting by the second.

This is the magic of photographing birds in the first light. You stop trying to control the moment and begin to move with it. Anticipation replaces urgency. Observation becomes instinct. The camera follows the rhythm rather than interrupts it.

I remember smiling as I shot. Not in pursuit of perfection, but out of gratitude. Gratitude for the light. Gratitude for the movement. Gratitude for being present at the exact moment when everything aligned.

Ranganathittu has a way of offering these mornings generously. It teaches you that nature’s most beautiful performances are never staged. They unfold when the light is right and the observer is patient.
These images are not about individual pelicans. They are about harmony. Wings rising and falling together. Water responding to motion. Light weaving itself through flight.

As the sun climbed higher and the tempo slowly softened, I lowered my camera. The raga had reached its pause, leaving behind a feeling that stayed far longer than the sound of wings.
Some mornings are meant to be felt as much as they are photographed.
And this was one of them.
